Description
Polyphemus Moth
This moth was huge - about 6-8 inces. We thought it was a bat at first when we saw it from inside the window. This image consists are two shots of the moth, a side view (superimposed) and then the main image of when it spread its wings. Note the beautiful markings of owl eyes which is a defense mechanism of the moth. When researching the type of moth, I was sad to learn that the adult moths have vestigial mouths or reduced mouth parts, so as an adult they only live for about a week since they don't eat. This is a male - note the antennae on the side view. These special atennae let it pick up a female pheromones from miles away. It will travel those miles to mate with the female and the female will spend the rest of her life laying eggs, while the male will mate a few times more.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
