Description
A Day in the Lives of South Steens Wild Horses, No. 5
I could see quite a few wild horses out in the foothills of South Steens, so I drove my car out on a rutted dirt road as far as I could and then hiked to get a closer view. I stayed at some distance so as not to disturb the horses. There were probably several bands just hanging out. Some resting, some grazing, and a few chasing each other, rough playing and a couple of instances of mating as well. The foals were mostly taking naps. (Spring)
This series shows multiple horses in a scene. I will also be uploading a series of two horses chasing each other and individual horses as well. What I like about this series, is the viewer is able to see mini-scenes. For instance, in one picture, the band is starting to move away while in the next image, the foal that had been sleeping in the previous image and that was left behind rises to follow. I watch these horses to observe their behavior and interaction with each other. The dynamics in one band can vary greatly in another. One band stallion rules by fear; another by love. The young play while the more mature horses focus on grazing and being alert to danger. Please check out my Wild Horses Gallery for more photographs and other herds including the Palomino Buttes Herd and the famous Pryor Mustangs.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
