Seeing Grizzly 399, I thought a lot about the responsibility she had for those four cubs. I had first heard of her the last time I was in the Grand Tetons (four years ago in 2016), and then heard the story about how she had lost her sole cub that year to a hit and run. In the back country she has to protect her cubs from boars (male grizzlies) who will kill them so that she will be receptive to mating. She needs to teach them to navigate rivers and roads, and how to find food and hunt. She is at the high end of a wild bear's average life span, but she seemed to me resolute and full of grace.
