Beryl Springs Mom Grizzly and Cubs painterly bw
Less than two weeks after I had seen this grizzly (called the Beryl Spring Grizzly) and her two cubs, I learned sadly that her two coys (cubs of the year) had been killed by a boar (male grizzly). This is not uncommon and is one of the reasons, that bears like 399 (Grand Tetons) tend to stick by highly trafficked areas (although a hazard in itself). The boars will kill cubs to mate with the sows. Yet it is really difficult having seen the young cubs follow their mom about and knowing they lived so briefly. And despite what many think (I saw such a comment on FB), the mama grizzlies do mourn, as 399 did when one of her prior cubs was struck down by a motorist. I know their brief lives had meaning for those of us who got to watch them and for their mother who will become an even more alert mother.
