Description
Clark's Nutcracker
I kept thinking this was a woodpecker when I saw a flash of white flying back and forth from tree to tree, so at least I was a little happy to know this bird is sometimes called a woodpecker crow. I may have seen some of these in Glacier National Park, but never at a rest, so I'm counting this as a first! Just read this very interesting passage from Wikipedia which I'm sharing here: "Clark's nutcracker is the primary seed disperser for whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis).[5] Whitebark pine is in decline throughout its range, due to infection by white pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola), widespread outbreaks of mountain pine beetle, and the long-term effects of fire suppression.[6] The Clark's nutcracker is an integral part of the whitebark pine restoration process: the Clark's nutcracker must remain in Whitebark Pine forests and cache the seeds in excess, so that healthy Whitebark Pine will continue to grow.[6] If whitebark pine declines into extinction, the Clark's nutcracker will lose an important source of food and may no longer be seen in areas where whitebark pine is the primary source of seed, such as Glacier National Park." Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
