Description
Dead Horse State Park
This state park lies next to and overlooks Canyonlands National Park as well as the Colorado River. The grim name of the park, legend has it, is because around the turn of the century cowboys used to herd wild horses that roamed the mesa through a narrow neck of land (30 feet wide) to a point which they used as a corral by blocking the neck with tumbleweed and brush, and then choose horses, letting the rest go free. It is said that one time, they neglected to unblock the neck and the horses died of thirst within sight of the river.
