Description
Desert Elephants of Damaraland, Namibia
While these Desert elephants are not a separate species or subspecies, they generally have bigger feet, longer legs, and smaller bodies than African Bush Elephants as they have adapted for the desert. To find these elephants, the guide visited various Damara locals to ask if the elephants had been seen or had visited their waterholes. These elephants usually go to the village waterholes for water. The Damara's ability to farm is limited because of the elephants and any gardens must be between houses or buildings. The elephants had not watered at any of the local holes, but a couple of locals said they had seen the elephants moving in a certain direction. The guide went off the dirt or gravel road and found them near a hillside in a heavily foliaged area where they were fairly well camouflaged. They came out to look at us before heading off. They were very protective of the small calf, seen here beneath the mother. The elephants tend to gather round the calf to keep it out of sight.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
