Description
Every Animal Needs Protection and a Habitat
This is a composite of two exposures, one of a white rhinoceros and the other of part of its habitat in Botswana early in the morning after a bit of early season rain which was badly needed. Rhinoceros, even more than elephants, are at risk from two dangers - first the sickening poaching by illegal cartels that butcher rhinos and then sell these animals' horns (which is primarily keratin, similar to our nails and hair) for ridiculous amounts to primarily Asian countries, a demand based on superstitions and for status, and the second reason, loss of habitat, either from climate change or agriculture which results in a lack of food and water. There are only two Northern White Rhinoceros left, both female, in the whole world, and less 80 sumatran rhinos, with the last female and male Sumatran rhinos in Malaysia dying in 2019. The western black rhino, a subspecies of the black rhino, was declared extinct in 2011, with the last being spotted in 2006. Our doing.
