Description
Facing the Threat
I was boondocking on BLM land, also the Palomino Butte Herd Herd Management Area and woke to see these two off in the distance. I walked slowly towards them, and was still between 100 to 150 yards away. At such a distance the last thing I expected was for the horses to start running towards me. I was unnerved and thought it was because they had their backs were to me and only caught sight of me when one turned around and weren't near their band. I even thought perhaps someone had fed these two, but I didn't want to take any chances. I slowly backed away finding a tree to stand by. They galloped up to about 25 feet away and I talked to them gently until they could assess I wasn't a threat. Usually the adult wild horses I've encountered will ignore me or slowly move away while grazing, and I never want to encroach upon their space. I later read that wild horses often face the threat rather than flee. At any rate, they finally decided I wasn't going to harm them and lost interest in me allowing me to back away from them, which was good as there weren't many trees around!

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
