Description
Grazing and Resting
There were two bands in this pasture (with a generous area of land between them) on the slope of Steens Mountain, public lands managed by BLM. This is a multiple exposure (17) panoramic view of the area to give an idea of scale. I find it fascinating to observe the horses and the interaction between them. Unfortunately, I cannot be like Emerson's invisible eye, so the presence of the photographer also changes their behavior, in some herds, more than others. In this, the harem stallion of the nearest band, was alert to my presence and never took his eyes off me. The one foal was curious, and as I moved to photograph two other foals (still at quite a distance from them) the mares around those foals, also grew alert. This alertness will protect them from challenges from predators such as cougars, or a coyote pack, and also from challenges from other stallions.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
