Laysan Albatrosses in Love
While hiking down a path to a secluded beach in Kauai, we were on the lookout for laysan albatross who nest in the area. Sure enough, up the hill, through the branches, we saw movement and heard the clicks and vocalizations of albatrosses. There were two albatross there at a nest greeting two others that had flown in. They broke into pairs, although remaining in a circle and started bowing their heads and stretching their necks. What a strange, beautiful, and mysterious ritual. While upgraded to near-threatened from vulnerable, they are still at risk from longline fisheries and plastic pollution (ingestion).
