Description

This hummingbird was beautiful and his tongue was out in this photo, but he was just against the sky in my photograph. I created a background for him, first using another exposure, and then layers of color, blends and brushstrokes, with waterlilies,some painted and some composited in.

Hummingbirds are among the smallest of birds. You often hear one before you see it. They make a humming sound, almost like the hum of a bee, caused by the rapid beating of their wings. Their wings beat at a rate of 12-80 times per second! They are the only birds that can fly backwards and they can fly at speeds of 15m/s.

Hummingbirds drink nectar, but also need protein for their metabolism. They prey on insects and spiders. They can live up to 10 years, although the 1st year, especially during hatching and leaving the next, is a vulnerable time. Some hummingbirds species use spider silk in weaving the nest, allowing the next to expand for the growing young.
