Male and Female Elephant Seal

This picture is of a male and female elephant seal. As you can see the difference is size is spectacular - males can be more than 10 times larger. I thought the smaller one was a pup, before reading about the differences between the males and females. The males have that unflattering snout, but it helps them to produce a loud roar that scares off competition. They can hold their breath for up to 100 minutes and the female seals can dive up to 6000 feet deep. They both were sleeping peacefully in the afternoon sun - the male about 20 feet back.He started to move, and disturbed her. They had this interchange, and then she moved away in a huff!

P.S. This female had suffered some type of bite (seen more clearly in another image in this series), but seems to be healing.
