Mischievous Lion Cub Wanting to Play with Sibling, No. 6
A whole pride of lions were hanging out by the Sueda waterhole, including cubs. The lions moved away from the waterhole, and most were resting between two banks of rocks that were between 8-10 feet high and partially hidden from the waterhole. There was a cub and a male adult that were in the open but lying down in tall grass. One restless and charismatic cub was in the mood to play, first trying with a sibling, then with its mother and finally still trying to get attention by hiding and peeking out between the bank of rock nearest the waterhole. He finally went to lie on top of the rock like the Lion King. Suddenly something caught the attention of the mother and another female, and they both rose up and grew alert. Groups of Springbok were heading to the waterhole to drink. They didn’t notice the lions, and though the two female lions were in stalking mode, they weren’t moving. The Springbok were on the opposite side of the water hole and they are very fast, so they may have been waiting for other prey that were also headed down to the waterhole to drink, including an Oryx and an Hartebeest. Unfortunately one Springbok caught sight of the naughty lion cub atop the rock. The animals on their way down towards the waterhole paused and also grew alert. Some started to retreat, and the opportunity was missed for the lions, who resumed a relaxed mode. Also, we didn’t see a male lion initially, but upon inspection on the pictures, there was one male that could have been a sub-adult. At the angle where we were, we couldn’t see all the lions fully that were lying in the shade of the rocks, so there could have been a male there.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
