Mt Rainier from Reflection Lake, No. 2
Mt. Rainier is the tallest mountain in the Cascade Range at 13,210 feet, and has 26 major glaciers. It is considered one of the most dangerous volcano in world due to the fact it is active and the large amount of glacial ice which could threaten parts of Seattle (54 miles away). It was originally called Mt Tacoma or Mt Tahoma by the native Americans which could mean "mother of waters" in lushootseed language of the Puyallup people or alternatively "larger than Mount Baker." It's current name was given by George Vancouver who named it after is friend Admiral Peter Rainier. The most recent volcanic activity was between 1820 and 1854, although there are later eyewitness accounts as late as 1894. Seismic monitors show the volcano is very much active but also asleep.
