Description
Powerful Female Lion
This lion was pretty far afield but having a good meal. She is a very muscular female and looks pretty well fed. After she finished, she got up and walked down the slope behind her. Within a few minutes a jackal appeared (it must have been waiting in the long grass), and trotted over to where the lion had been, stealing what appeared to be the horns and part of the skull of a red hartebeest and went about 50 yards towards us and and dropped it, and then rolled around a bit. Then it went back to the kill and got another piece and and went in the opposite direction, and dropped that piece. It did that twice more. Each time, my stomach was get more and more upset as I kept worrying the lion would come back. On the fourth trip, and perhaps with the biggest chunk, the jackal trotted away, across the road and into the brush, perhaps towards its den. We thought perhaps he was laying down multiple scent tracks to prevent the lion from following him, but who knows. Fascinating and a very brave jackal, and smart too! Jackal Stealing a Lion's Leftovers can be found in the same collection as this.
