Description
Salt River Mare and Her Colt, No. 1
When I visited Sedona, AZ, I wanted to go to see the Salt River Wild Horse Herd in the Tonto National Forest along the Salt River. We first saw a group of three grazing in the sagebrush, and then saw a group of four, looking like a small band (Stallion, Mare, and perhaps last year's foal and a colt from this year). The mare and stallion looked very thin with ribs clearly showing. The other three, down river, that we saw, were in better shape. The Salt River mustangs are much more used to people than the herds in Oregon which is understandable considering they are in a much used recreation spot. The horses were nearly all rounded up in 2015, but that was prevented due to an outspoken and dedicated group of volunteers who advocated on their behalf and who still monitor them. I met one while I was there who admonished a young women from throwing an apple to one of the horses. I heard a couple days after my visit there, two volunteers saved the life of a newborn foal who got caught in the rising waters of Salt River. Hoping on my next Arizona visit, I get to spend more time with them.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
