I was taking a picture of the bunny at the Malheur Wildlife Headquarters, and I thought it was funny how the ground squirrel seems to be lurking in the shadows. I also got pictures of him (cute), but I liked this pairing the best.
Malheur Wildlife Refuge has over 300 species of birds and over 50 species of mammals. It is a combination of deserts, grasslands, marshes and rimrock. The Donner und Blitzen River flows north through the refuge and is irrigated out, creating an artificial wetland, of 187,000 acres, in what used to be a natural wetland. Malheur Lake is the remnant of a Pleistocene lake that is estimated to have been about 900 square miles with a depth of 35 feet. It is a beautiful area with geographical diversity and teeming with wildlife.
