Description
South Steens Colt with Likely Sire
A stallion keeps an eye on me, while a colt, likely his, looks on. There were two bands in the area with a generous border of land between them (I've taken a multiple exposure panoramic view of the area to give an idea of scale). The harem stallion of the nearest band had his eyes on me as soon as I came into his line of vision. I was about 150-200 yards above him on a hill. I walked slowly parallel to the band towards a mare and foal that were west of the band. The stallion came halfway between the mare and the rest of the band, keeping alert to my every move. The foal then made it's way to the stallion. When the stallion started taking a few steps toward me as if deciding whether to approach me, I decided to back off. I have other pictures of the band that will be included in my Wild horses portfolio. I later encountered a photographer I had met once before who is far more familiar with the South Steens Herd than I. He said that some bands are comfortable with photographers at closer distances, while some will run if they see a human, and some can be dangerous. I had seen him once approach a band and get within probably 50 yards of a mare and foal. I had noticed variances between the bands at Palomino Buttes too. I also think that less secure stallions can be very skittish. The Salt River Herd in AZ and the Pryor Mustang Herd in MT, whom I’ve visited, both seem much more tolerant of people than the Oregon herds, probably because of the higher visitation rates. The time of year can also affect the behavior. In Spring, the horses seem much more frisky and high spirited, while in Fall, they are intent on grazing.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
