Description
I liked the way this mule deer's ears were in different directions. It made me think of a stereo system's surround sound, hence the title. Apparently their hearing is very good and keeps them alert to possible danger.
The difference between white tail deer and mule deer are the size of their ears and their black-tipped tails. The male's antlers also bifurcate rather than branching out from a single stem, although there were no males with antlers in this small herd. They feed on woody vegetation and eat little grass, although in the winter they will eat more. They tend not to stray far from water or forage.
Malheur Wildlife Refuge has over 300 species of birds and over 50 species of mammals. It is a combination of deserts, grasslands, marshes and rimrock. The Donner und Blitzen River flows north through the refuge and is irrigated out, creating an artificial wetland, of 187,000 acres, in what used to be a natural wetland. Malheur Lake is the remnant of a Pleistocene lake that is estimated to have been about 900 square miles with a depth of 35 feet. It is a beautiful area with geographical diversity and teeming with wildlife.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
