Description
The Calm of a Moose
There is something magical about moose. They are so calm, but that doesn't mean they can't become aggressive or frightened. This moose looked a bit mangy after surviving the winter, but what is more disturbing is the declining numbers of moose in certain states in the last decade. In northwestern Minnesota, numbers have plunged from 4000 to about 100. One culprit seems to be a brain worm, a parasite that coexists with white-tailed deer. Deep winter snows used to keep the two animals apart, but warmer winters have changed that. Luckily moose are thriving in other areas, but the precipitous drop in these states is disturbing and shows just how delicate the balance of nature can be.
This is a composite work, using two of my images with a texture to create moody atmosphere for this worn but wonderful cow moose.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
