Description
The Famous Smith Mansion -Wyoming
I learned of this mansion on Road Trippers as I was planning a short trip to Yellowstone. Intrigued by the abandoned home's mystique and odd architecture, I made a point of looking for it on my way back to Yellowstone from Pryor Mountain.
Lee Smith built this home without plans and using timber he hauled himself from the Rattle Snake Mountain that was free to use after the fires of 1952. He and his family lived in his home while he were building it although they had no electricity. Sadly he fell to his death off the roof in 1992 and the home is now reputed to be haunted.
The sun was not at the right angle to get a better side view, but the small black and white figure shows the house's stunning exterior staircase. There is an effort to preserve this home which has been vandalized and is falling victim to the elements. Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
