Washington Monument was Robert Mills and construction started in 1848 but was halted in 1854 due to a lack of funds, a struggle for control over the Monument Society and the intervention of the Civil War. Construction restarted in 1877 and finished in 1888. Until the Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889, it was the world's tallest structure and remains the world's tallest stone structure.
