Description
We're None The Wiser
This artwork was inspired by thought association starting with the photograph of the Eurasian Eagle Owl, then the phrase "None the Wiser", and then humankind in regards to climate change and other environmental threats, and heavily influenced by the fact that I had just finished watching the powerful HBO series, Chernobyl. The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 and can be traced to the Chicago Atomic Scientists who worked on the Manhattan project. "After the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they began publishing a mimeographed newsletter and then the magazine, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists..." "As Eugene Rabinowitch, another co-founder of the Bulletin, explained later,
The Bulletin's Clock is not a gauge to register the ups and downs of the international power struggle; it is intended to reflect basic changes in the level of continuous danger in which mankind lives in the nuclear age.." Wikipedia. It reflects the urgency we face from man-made threats that can destroy mankind such as: nuclear threats, climate change, bioterrorism, and artificial intelligence. The current time is 2 minutes to Midnight. Humans first appeared on Earth 66 million years ago. We have probably only developed the means to destroy ourselves in the last 100 years. We consider ourselves evolved, civilized and the intelligent species, yet, our actions have been responsible for the extinction of how many other species? Due to the nuclear accident at Chernobyl, over 1000 acres of land will be uninhabitable for 20,000 years. Both Chernobyl and Fukushima still present dangers - for example, forest fires could re-disperse radioactive particles that have settled into trees and brush. Meanwhile we dabble in artificial intelligence and genetic engineering without fully considering unintended long term effects. And of course, we are doing little or nothing to combat climate change. Can we move time back. Yes we have that capability. Will we?
