Description
East of Steens
Driving south along Hwy 78 you come upon the northern section of Steens Mountain, a large fault-block mountain often confused as being arange, but really a sole mountain. The southern section is topped by snow. It is also distinctive that it is is the largest mountain without conifers, which is speculated to be caused either by a prehistoric fire or the mountains' isolation from seed spreading birds. It rises to an elevation of 9,733 feet.
