Description
I saw this horse on my way to look for the Kiger Mustangs in Harney County, south of Burns, Oregon. After a rather adventurous trek down an 11 mile road that started in gravel with a huge herd of cows (and cute calves) roaming around which I had to shoo from the road, the road soon changed to dirt, ruts and rocks. I figured I was too far in, and too stubborn to quit, despite the complaints from my car's suspension! Never did see those mustangs. But I digress!
This horse I saw on on the side of the road was beautiful and looked wild. He ran when I stopped the car, but to my surprise ran to me. I wondered later after reviewing the pictures, whether he had been adopted from the wild herds (probably not Kigers) as he had all sorts of scars. He also had a bad sore on his leg which I noticed and now worry about. He was with a mare, who had a very round belly (pregnant) and didn't run as fast, but rather waddled. [Since writing this I've discussed this horse with someone familiar with the area, and he said it was most likely that he was wild as the wild horses do get outside the boundaries, especially in light of his scars and wounds.]
Despite the disappointment about the Kigers, I did get to see wild horses from the Steens herd the next day, and from the Palomino-Buttes herd the day after.

Nature, animals, beauty has always been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Modern life can drain us with its demands and imbalances. Yet when I talk a walk through the woods, see a tree that's been around for 200 or more years and has weathered storms and survived, I am in awe. I am entranced by animals' various behaviors in foraging for their food, eluding predators, dealing with rain and snow, and nurturing their young along the way. I am never bored by nature. The emergence of buds, flower and color from a stark winter's landscape still takes my breath away. I find it magical how light can change shift the mood and features of a landscape. I can look down at the ground from time to time, and see a creature I've never seen before (just lately a white-lined sphinx moth).

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
