I had never been to Alabama Hills in Calfiornia. I loved the area. The Sierra Nevadas are beautiful and tower over the desert landscape (definied as such by BLM but with a variety of flora). Thereare streams flowing down from the hills through the flat areas. In fact Payahuunadu is the original name given to the area by the Paiute tribe meaning “the land of flowing water.” Then there are the Alabama Hills, which are rounded clumps of rock formations forming hills that contast with the taller jagged peaks of the the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range . The mountains and the hills are same age and made of the same materials (volcanic rock and granite) as their larger counterparts. It is theorized that patterns of erosion differed at the lower elevation of the Alabama Hills and that also earthquakes in the area may have had an effect as well. Owens Lake, mostly dry, sits between the Sierra Nevada Range and the Inyo mountains to the east
