Description
Millions of years ago, a large earthquake uplifed the sedimentary rock deposits in the Capitol Reef so that the rock layers on the west side lifted 7000 feet over the east side. Capitol Reef was given its name as rounded dome like rock formations of sandstone resembled Caitol Domed buidlings while the red cliffs were barriers to travel like the reefs in the ocean. Subsequent erosioin by water created further geological interest to the landscape.
