Horned Puffin, No. 2
We saw two types of puffin on the tour of Resurrection Bay out of Seward, Alaska. The Horned puffin is the second-largest of the puffins. All puffins have short wings that enable them to swim under water in a flying manner. The shorter wings, however, prevent them from gliding, so when they fly through the air, they must beat their wings rapidly, up to 400 strokes per minute. Also, their shorter wings prevent a vertical lift-off from water, so they must skitter across the water in rising. They also have a hingeing mechanism in their beak that allows the two biting edges to meet at various angles. They also can hold multiple fish in their bills to feed their young (rather than swallowing and regurgitating), so they return with a larger feeding for their chick, a benefit since their foraging trips are longer.

Welcome to my page! There's a lot of photography here, so feel free to make multiple visits. The work can be viewed in galleries or you can search by keywords or title. I have a passion for the natural world and the living creatures that inhabit those places. The stunning beauty of our world and the wild animals that share this earth with us deserve to be revered and protected. In 2019, I was honored to have my work, Cougar Reservoir On A Snowy Day, published in the UK Sunday Times for their interview with Barry Lopez, the nature writer. In addition, recently, three large prints of waterfalls (Spirit Falls with Reflection, Moon Falls, and Pinard Falls), were bought by the Cottage Grove Ranger District Office to decorate their new work...
