You could almost image you were walking on the moon, but this is the lava fields in the Three Sisters Wilderness viewed near the Dee Wright Observatory, built in 1935. From the observatory you can see the nearly 20 Cascade peaks on a good day, including complex volcano of the Three Sisters (North, Middle and South), Mt. Jefferson, Mt Washington and in the far distance Mt Hood.
North Sister is extinct, Middle Sister inactive, but South Sister could still erupt (last eruption 2000 years ago) and is being watched but the US Geological Survey as an uplift was detected in 2000.
