Mono Lake Tufa, No. 5
Mono Lake, on the eastern end of Tioga Pass, is a lake with no outlet to the ocean. As a result salt accumulates and the water is alkaline. Rock formations, mostly at the south end of the lake, are limestone deposits form when underwater springs, rich in calcium mix with lakewater that is full of carbonates (baking soda). These tufa grow underwater but were exposed when lake levels dropped after water diversions to Los Angeles started in 1941. This area would have been underwater at one time. Love the diversity of the landscape (just east of Yosemite).
