The coypu or nutria are not everyone's favorite. They are seen as invasive. Sometimes people mistake them for a beaver, but they tend to be smaller with round tails. These two were seen at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge in Washington.
I think they can be quite cute, especially the young. I once saw a mother who had three babies and was seen on the McKenzie River. They were separated by high river water, and later I saw the mother swimming through the rushing water calling out for her babies. There was one baby on top of a stick pile, but she swam right by it and it always breaks my heart to recall that image, but in my mind I tell myself that they were reunited after the river calmed.
