Ohanapecosh River


On the east side of Mount Rainier National Park, the Ohanapecosh River is a beautiful clear and green river. We had been up river a a few hundred yards and smelled smoke. Someone had built an illegal campfire near here either the night before or even perhaps two nights earlier. Thought they buried it, the smoldering embers set the trees roots on fire and was spreading to the two large conifers. The base of one was warm to the touch.Fortunately we smelled the smoke, and after finding the smoking blackened area, I got my 6 gallon water storage container to douse the area over and over again for 45 minutes, waiting for help (since I had flagged down a woman who said she would contact a ranger). When no one came, I had my niece take over getting water from the river while I left to contact the park rangers, since flagging other people down had not resulted in any one offering to help.
