I was walking one late afternoon by the Leaburg Canal in Oregon and saw this female Mallard swimming. Long shadows were cast on the water by the setting sun, and this duck meandered in and out of the shadows as she kept alert to my approach. The male mallard ducks have a glossy green heard, while the females are mottled with a bit of blue or teal on their speculum feathers on the wings.
