Description
Long Billed Dowitcher
This marsh bird was seen at the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, in Harney County, Oregon, south of Burns. The are often seen near shallow ponds with muddy bottoms. They eat insects, worms, mollusks and crustaceans, and also some plant material. They vary from the short-billed Dowitcher, not only in the bill length, but also they prefer fresh water.
Malheur Wildlife Refuge has over 300 species of birds and over 50 species of mammals. It is a combination of deserts, grasslands, marshes and rimrock. The Donner und Blitzen River flows north through the refuge and is irrigated out, creating an artificial wetland, of 187,000 acres, in what used to be a natural wetland. Malheur Lake is the remnant of a Pleistocene lake that is estimated to have been about 900 square miles with a depth of 35 feet. It is a beautiful area with geographical diversity and teeming with wildlife.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
