Description
Rock from Ash
This is Smith Rock State Park. I named the image Rock from Ash because essentially that is what Smith Rock is. About 30 million or so years ago there was a caldera formed by an overlying rock crashing into a lava pit and creating rock and ash debris which filled the pit. This is called a uff. Material hardened into rock and then was covered by a basalt lava flow from a nearby volcano about half a million years ago. The tuff has been carved through by the river and erosion. Smith Rock is at 3200 feet above sea level while the river is about 2600 ft. The cliffs are now a popular destination for rock climbers.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
