Description
I was waiting for the sun to set and noticed this black crow also looking out to sea towards the setting sun. The light was golden. If you look closely at the crow's feathers, the black varies from black brown to blue black. The feathers are iridescent in areas. And I love the contrast of his sheen against the texture of the rock he stands on. Crows are extremely intelligent. I don't find that hard to believe. This one looked at me, then his gaze returned to the sun over the sea. I have to say, this particular bird seemed almost philosophical.
The photograph was taken at a turnout along Hwy.101 in Oregon where you can have a great view of the Heceta Head Lighthouse. The lighthouse is just north of Florence, Oregon and south of Yachats. It was recently restored, and is well worth a visit. It was originally built in 1892. There is also a trailhead north of the beach, where you can hike to the lighthouse. Be forewarned, there are a lot of uphill stretches. The keeper's cottage is supposedly haunted by a woman called Rue. I look for her every time I'm there, but I've never seen her!
It's a great area to visit. There are sea lion caves nearby. I happened to see one sunning itself on a rock earlier in the day. South of Florence are dunes. For those of you who like the nightlife and have money to burn, there is also an Indian casino in Florence.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
