Description
It was a delight to observe the male sea lions hanging out on the piers at Newport, Oregon (the females stay in the south at Channel Islands, CA). First they sleep en mass and it's a wonder how they can sleep in such a contorted and compacted way, but then one decides to make a move, or a newcomer wants to hop on board, and an indignant cacophony of sounds breaks forth. And the offending sea lion either lumbers over the bodies of his mates or gets knocked off into the sea. And then there are some who choose to ignore the fray and who sleep sweetly through. These seal lions were on the newly rebuilt sea lion docks (the old docks were destroyed in a winter's storm in 2022), while hundreds more gathered on the rocks off shore.
