Description
This was perhaps the most interesting dynamic I watched. The band, Fireball's band, came into the waterhole. The stallion flanked the band and isn't in the first picture, because the band was being shadowed by this beautiful dun paint bachelor. The band went to the waterhole, but for the half hour or more they were there, Fireball was kept busy keeping the dun paint bachelor away from his band. I was impressed with the persistence and intelligence of the dun pain bachelor. He would get run off, then approach from a different angle, and never gave up. Then two other horses showed up and the dun paint (Interloper) went to greet them and from time to time, they would act affectionately towards each other. But the dun paint kept going back. At one time, Fireball's band was separated into two groups. a mare and her foal that were moving north with a few hanging back. The interloper at first tried cut out the mare and foal, but Fireball cut him off. Then he saw that the other few horses were separate and went after them. This continued until they worked their way over a hill and went out of sight. They came back two days later and another photographer felt the dun paint might have been trying to work his way in the group, but it didn't seem that way to me on the first day I saw them, although the next time, the stallion seemed a bit more tolerant of the dun paint who was still following the band. It is fascinating to watch these mustangs in a natural habitat. The dynamcis and interactions are complexx and the relationships very real, although bands are stolen and hierarchies everchanging.
