Mama Monk Seal and Pup at the Shoreline, No. 2 - RB00 and PK1
A mother monk seal and her pup playing along the northern shoreline of Kauai, Hawaii. Hawaiian monk seals are endangered and one of two remaining monk seals. The third species is now extinct. They have a low genetic variation. There are currently only about 1400 individuals. Threats include shrinking habitat due to erosion, fishing nets as well as reduced prey abundance and the higher male to female ratio which can result in mobbing a female and harming her. Monk Seals are protected by law. Conservationists on the island establish a perimeter border around the nursing mother and volunteers often monitor the area. Mothers nurse for about six weeks during which they will not eat. This mother prevents the pup from going beyond the reef where it might fall prey to sharks and on this day was also keeping it the water. A large Green Sea Turtle was also sunning itself in the protected area.
The mother see is know as RBoo (official name RB00) and was born in 2007. Her pup is a male named PK1 and was five weeks old at the time of this image (born in 2019). RBoo was born on Kauai, but this is the first time she’s given birth on the same beach where she was born.
