Description
Verreaux's Juvenile Eagle on the Nest
A juvenile Verreaux's eagle waits on its nest for its parents who went soaring below us as we watched the sun set over the Klip River Valley from the Etendeka Plateau. As the light was fading, I had initially left my telephoto lens in the jeep, and so missed this bird's parents in flight. The Verreaux eagle is the sixth largest eagle in length and has interesting white markings on an otherwise black body that looks like a v on its scapulars and a patch of white on its rump, seen in flight, but otherwise not as noticeable. The light was low, on the rock facade of the cliffs, but you can see how impressive this young eagle will be. After sunset, the parents had not yet returned and it was crying out for them, having jumped to the light colored rock by the right side of the nest for a better view of their homecoming.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
