Description
The High Priestess
I was up at the Willliam L Finley Refuge near Corvallis OR, when a woman told me a snowy owl was hanging out at Fern Ridge Reserve closer to where I live. The next day I set off. About a mile out on a bern, this owl was living. At first just the white of it's head could be seen, then it flew to another area nearby where it was more visible, and then after 20 minutes, it heard so more people coming, so it flew to another spot. It seemed fairly tolerant of the birders and photographers who did come, luckily no more than 4 or 5 at a time, since it was quite a hike out there. I was happy to have had its company to myself for about half an hour.
I knew this was one subject I would also want to apply a more painterly effect to at least a couple of the shots I got of this snowy owl. Another photographer was on top of the bern and it looks like she was startled and it looked like she was going to fly away, but she actually hopped/flew forward just a foot or so and settled into a more visible position. We were told the owl was a female, and later I read the males are nearly white while the females and juveniles have the darker markings. She had such a calm regal manner about her, the High Priestess seemed an apt title for this.

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
I currently reside in Oregon, an environment rich in nature's graces. I have lived in California and New York, too, and everywhere there is a world of beauty around us, if we care to take the time and look for it.
